  • Pakistan Government to Review Ammendments to the Drug Law After Tragic Protest

    Pakistan, a country holding strategic importance on the globe, is place full of culture and diversity. The region has been engulfed by negativity owing to the last 2 decades of involvement in War against terror. Pakistan in on the growth curve, where the citizens are becoming more aware and can exercise their rights as compared to what the case was a few years ago.

    In response to recent amendments in Drug Law, A group of Stake Holders in the Pharmacy Profession gathered together to hold a peaceful protest. Unfortunately, what was supposed to be a peaceful event turned bloody when it was targeted with a suicide attack, resulting in casualties. The whole nation was saddened by the incident and the act was condemned locally and internationally. Later on, the protesters, shook by the incident, mustered up courage to reunite to fight for their rights. After consecutive meetings and by the tireless efforts of the stake holders, the government agreed to review the recent amendments.

    Even though the event is etched by a sad incident, the success of the protest is a tribute to those who lost their lives during the fight for their rights.

    FAPA and MPS to Host a Stakeholders’ Forum on SDP this May 2017nn

    FAPA President Mr. Joseph Wang met with MPS Officials last Feb 13 and 15, 2017 to finalize the program and venue of the upcoming forum

    nnFAPA President Mr. Joseph Wang visited Kuala Lumpur to meet with officials from the Malaysian Pharmaceutical Society (MPS) last February 13 and 15, 2017. The meetings were held at Hotel Istana Kuala Lumpur City Centre where the May 2017 Forum on SDP and FAPA meetings are set to be held this coming May 11-13, 2017. The celebration of the 50th Anniversary is also set to be held in the same venue from May 13-14, 2017.nn nnAn ocular inspection of the plenary and meeting rooms were conducted and the program for the upcoming events were finalized between the two hosts. The meetings will start with the FAPA Bureau meeting to be held in the afternoon of May 11.nn

    nnThe MPS, which is set to celebrate their 50th anniversary invited the FAPA Bureau and Member Association Presidents to join their Congress’ opening ceremony in the morning of May 13 followed by a plenary lecture on SDP from a representative of the World Health Organization (WHO).nnThe Stakeholder’s Forum on SDP, with the theme “Addressing the Medication Safety Challenge in Asian Countries: Separation of Dispensing and Prescribing Practices” will be divided into two parts. The first part, “Achieving SDP: The Asian Experience” aims to share the specific steps and engagement with various stakeholders that Pharmacy Associations from countries like Japan, Korea and Taiwan has taken to successfully implement SDP in their country. This will be held in the afternoon of May 12, 2017. The second part, “Ensuring Patient Safety through Separation of Dispensing and Prescribing” aims to collect insights from Consumer Groups and other health professional organizations on the impact of SDP on patient outcomes and collaboration among the members of the healthcare team. The second part is set to be held in the afternoon of May 13, 2017.nn

  • Separation of Dispensing and Prescribing Practices (SDP)

    Stakeholder’s Forum on SDP to be held in Malaysia this May 2017nnOne of FAPA’s Targets is the implementation of the Separation of Dispensing and Prescribing Practices (SDP) among Member Associations from different Asian countries. This is a step towards enhancing pharmaceutical care services by ensuring better collaboration among members of the health care team to promote patient safety and better health outcomes.nnThis coming May 12 – 13, 2017, FAPA will solidify its commitment by hosting a Stakeholders’ Forum on SDP at the Hotel Istana Kuala Lumpur City Centre in Malaysia together with the Malaysian Pharmaceutical Society (MPS) that is also celebrating their 50th anniversary. Presidents and Representatives from Member Associations, consumer groups, other health professions organizations and Ministries of Health are expected to join this very important forum for the Pharmacy Profession in Asia. Speakers will come from Countries where the SDP movement has been successful, namely Japan, Korea and Taiwan.     FAPA to Strengthen Ties in Vietnam 

    FAPA President Mr. Joseph Wang visited Ho Chi Minh last January 23, 2017, to meet with officers of the Vietnamese Pharmaceutical Association (VPA). The objective of the meeting was to strengthen ties between VPA and FAPA by gathering information on the situation of the Pharmacy Profession in Vietnam and sharing the current initiatives of FAPA.

    Updates from Vietnam

    VPA is expected to have a turnover of leadership with their elections set this 2017. In addition, the New Pharmacy Law in Vietnam has recently been passed and is in its first year of implementation, replacing the law which was last amended in 2005.

    Some of the notable changes brought about by the new pharmacy law includes the following:

    • Reduction of the required years of experience, from five (5) to two (2) years, before pharmacists can open their own community pharmacy.
    • Allowing the sale of selected OTC in supermarkets
    • Vietnam government now allows foreigners to own 100% shares of pharmaceutical manufacturing corporations
    • Stricter implementation of Separation of Dispensing and Prescribing Practices (SDP) starting 2017. Pharmacies cannot dispense ethical drugs without prescription.

    Gearing up for Collaboration with FAPA

    VPA is seeking for more ways to actively collaborate with FAPA and are currently supporting FAPA’s existing initiatives. They have helped in promoting the 2016 FAPA AMR, which was supported by Vietnam’s Ministry of Health and the World Health Organization (WHO) Country Office. FAPA and VPA is working on translating the winning entries from other countries into the local language to promote awareness on AMR.

    The delegate from the 2016 International Good Pharmacy Practice (GPP) Training Program in Taiwan is also currently disseminating the lessons to Vietnamese students.

     

    VPA is eager to promote attendance and active participation in the upcoming FAPA Congress in 2018 in Manila and 2020 in Hong Kong. Other FAPA meetings and events where VPA will participate includes the upcoming Forum on the Separation of Dispensing and Prescribing Practices (SDP) in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia on May 12-13, 2017

    Dear ALL Pharmacist Colleagues and Fellows:

    That the people in Thailand encounter such an unexpected great loss in their life time, our beloved Late HM King Bhumibol Adulyadej the Great has passed away since October 13 of 2016, first of all, we would like to express our gratitude towards all your condolences and sympathy.
    Moreover, we can assure all would-be participants of 2016 FAPA Congress, being held in Bangkok BITEC Bangna during November 8-13 of 2016, will definitely experience Thai Hospitality, not to mention the well-defined congressional events.
    We can also state that, during your stay in Thailand, all environment conditions, including political and economic aspects, will be unchanged. The country remains stable without any unrest events or activities. You may act and behave as normal/usual. Please feel free. Life in Thailand will proceed and remain as normal.
    The only things we may ask you are that please just respect our sorrow and grief. Nothing more. Please enjoy the FAPA Spirit and Traditions as you feel like.
    Last but not least, whether some of you do not mind, the  Pharmaceutical Association of Thailand under Royal Patronage will provide you, per request, strips of black ribbon for attaching at you left arm to show your respect. Anyway, it is certainly up to your wills.
